The reality is 138,000 horse were shipped to slaughter in Canada and Mexico in 2011. Studies have shown that 96.3% of all horses that go to slaughter are mentally and phsyically sound and capable of continued use. Given our tough economic times, many people simply can't afford their horses and are forced to send them to auction where they end up being sold by the pound for meat. The horses are sent from auction to 'kill pens' - where they wait for the trucks to haul them to the slaughter houses in Canada. Sadly, many of these horses are perfectly sound, sane and safe to ride.
Our mission is to save young horses from Canadian slaughter. We purchase young horses directly from "Kill Buyers" and transporting them to our facility in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Since we have a limited facility in Ipswich, we often run out of stalls. Given our limited capacity, we continue to help slaughter-bound horses by purchasing them from killbuyers and donating them to other partnering (501c3) equine rescues organizations who specialize in training and placing horses in permenant homes.
Hope4Horse.org (H4H) is a registered 501c3 organization. We are staffed exclusively by volunteers and funded by generous contributions from equine enthusiasts. Hope4Horses also benefits from the Equestrian Exchange, an equine consignment shop in Hamilton, MA and from the EquineRescueNetwork
100% of all donation dollars go towards rescuing and caring for horses!
